Presidential Visit Illustrates NC State’s Growing Reputation

To NC State Faculty, Staff and Students:

I am constantly reminded of how NC State’s brand continues to grow, of how our reputation as a world-class research university is further strengthened every day. President Obama’s recent visit to campus is a perfect example.

As you know, he announced that NC State will lead the new Next Generation Power Electronics Innovation Institute.  It’s a big deal. This $140 million advanced manufacturing institute will unite academic, government and industry partners to revolutionize energy efficiency across a wide range of applications, including electronic devices, power grids and electric vehicles.

It’s also the largest government research grant in NC State history.

Any one of a dozen universities could have been chosen for this institute. NC State got the nod, and it’s no accident. We enjoy many “firsts” and many “onlys.”

  • The only NSF-funded smart grid research center in the U.S.
  • The only NSF-funded center for self-powered health monitoring sensors and devices
  • The largest textiles college program in the U.S.
  • The only next generation wireless test bed system in the U.S.

NC State has more than 150 years of history of excellence in teaching, and the creation and application of practical knowledge, and engagement with public and private partners. That’s why we were chosen for this institute.

That history has given us the experience to be a leader. After all, President Obama has visited NC State twice in the last three years. That’s no accident either. He understands our position as a preeminent university for research, innovation and economic development.

Of course it is always a great honor to host a president on campus and it’s what we do here every day of every year that creates the great opportunity to showcase our strengths.  I know it, you know it, and every day more of the world gets to know it.

NC State’s brand is indeed growing larger by the day, thanks to the incredible accomplishments we’ve achieved – accomplishments that make the President of the United States take notice.

Sincerely,

Randy Woodson
Chancellor
