Military Partnership and Appreciation

As Veterans Day nears, we reflect on NC State’s rich legacy of partnership with the United States Military. Our iconic Memorial Belltower serves not only as a symbol of our great university but also as a monument to those who gave their lives in service to our country. In remembrance, we light it red on Veterans Day.

NC State is the Think and Do university, and our research has real-life application. The College of Humanities and Social Sciences houses opportunities like the Language Training Center, a unique program that provides language and cultural competency training to members of the armed forces. In the College of Textiles researchers are creating innovations in stable nanoscale hybrid fabrics for military and defense applications. Supported by an Air Force Office of Scientific Research grant, these materials may be used in aircraft to enhance thermal protection, impact and vibration damping, and aerosol filtration.

NC State also supports veterans and members of the military by helping them achieve their educational and leadership goals. The Poole College of Management’s Jenkins MBA Program is ranked #10 online MBA program for veterans by the US News & World Report. On campus, the Division of Academic and Student Affairs facilitates three Reserve Officer Training Corps programs available to students: Air Force ROTC, Army ROTC and Naval and Marine Corps ROTC.

Last year the Military and Veteran Resource Center opened, and it offers our active duty, veteran and ROTC students academic support, housing, health care, and connections with others. NC State is also home to several military–based student organizations including the Arnold Air Society, Silver Wings, The Ranger Challenge, Color Guard, Honor Guard, Quarter Deck Society, Semper Fi Society, and others. NC State Athletics features Military Appreciation Days to honor active duty military and veterans. All told, our efforts to continue finding new ways to support members of the military have earned us a place in the top 10 Military Friendly research universities.

We also want to recognize the many members of NC State’s outstanding faculty and staff who are on active duty or are veterans themselves. Their accomplishments at NC State have shown the powerful impact individuals with military experience have on their community.

To those who have served our country, thank you. We are proud that you are part of the Wolfpack family. Whether you are one of our students, faculty, staff, or alumni, our university is stronger, more motivated, and better equipped to face global challenges because of your presence.
