Response to DACA Announcement

NC State Students, Faculty and Staff:

The announcement on September 5, 2017 by the US Attorney General that the federal government is ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program has generated great concern among many across our nation, including in our NC State community.

DACA students are valuable contributors to our university and enhance the quality of our student body. Every day the “dreamers” enrich and strengthen the talent, insight and culture of NC State and other institutions of higher education across the country.

Today’s announcement left a number of unanswered questions. An orderly and lawful wind down was mentioned, but details are limited at this time. It is also unclear what action Congress might take. As we work to find answers to these and other related concerns, NC State administration will continue to work with UNC System General Administration, the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities, and elected officials to encourage support for DACA students going forward.

In the meantime, to our DACA students, please know you remain a welcomed and valuable part of the NC State community. No changes to our policies have occurred, and NC State will continue to support all DACA students to the fullest extent possible. Counseling, legal advice and other support services will continue to be provided to all students.

For our DACA students or anyone affected by this situation, please contact the Counseling Center for any needed counseling or mental health support. If you would like advice or representation within the scope of the prepaid student legal services plan, please contact Student Legal Services.

Of course, if anyone witnesses or experiences intimidation, harassment or violence against individuals or groups, please file a report with University Police or the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity so that these incidents can be thoroughly investigated.
