Freedom of Speech

To NC State Faculty, Students and Staff:

Freedom of speech was a founding principle of our nation and is the first of protected rights in our Bill of Rights. This right is viewed by many as one of the most important institutions of liberty.

One of the great things about a university campus is the free and open exchange of ideas, differing views and sometimes controversial opinions – all in a respectful and educational environment, whether we individually agree or not.

As a public institution of higher education, NC State is committed to fostering free speech and the open debate of ideas. We follow all federal and state laws and university policies with respect to free speech and the conduct of campus events.

Later this week, as they did last year, the Genocide Awareness Project will set up a display on The Brickyard. Working with a student group, GAP has applied for and obtained the required legal permits, as have several student groups that plan to voice opposing views.

NC State has a long history of engaging, thought-provoking discussions, public debate and the protection of varying viewpoints. As individuals that make up our community, we might not always agree with what we see and hear, even finding some speech offensive or hurtful, but the ability for everyone to peacefully express their views is central to our country, our campus and a free and open society.
