Standing with our Asian and Asian American community

NC State students, faculty and staff,

Our NC State family is saddened, shocked and rightfully angered by the horrific violence in Atlanta that claimed eight lives, including six people from the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. We are appalled by this tragic loss of life, and we mourn with our nation, our university and especially with members of NC State’s AAPI community.

While the investigation into the Atlanta murders continues, this week’s violence serves as a stark reminder of the sharp rise in acts of discrimination and violence nationwide — including in North Carolina — against Asians, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders over the last year. This troubling reality must concern us all.

NC State condemns these and all acts of discrimination and violence.

I want to acknowledge and encourage support for NC State’s Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends whose background and experiences make these horrible events personal and even more painful. We stand in complete support of and solidarity with you, today and every day.

For all who may need it, we have free support resources available through our NC State Counseling Center for students (virtual appointments are available), and through the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program for employees. Please do not hesitate to reach out and use these important and helpful resources.

This week’s tragedy additionally serves as a disturbing but important reminder of the continued need to confront hate and injustice, and to continue striving to welcome and support all members of our community. I call on every member of our community to stand firm in condemning and combating inequality, discrimination and racism in all forms.

We know the heart of our university’s strength and excellence is its unique and amazing people, combined with our diversity of thought and experience. We must work tirelessly, together, to ensure a welcoming, inclusive and supportive environment where our Asian and AAPI community, and all in our Pack, can thrive.

Sincerely,

W. Randolph Woodson
Chancellor
