State Budget Update

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

As you likely know, the North Carolina state budget that was proposed last year has not been enacted. As we enter February, I’d like to provide an update about how this affects NC State University.

The proposed state budget includes key funding for critical and time-sensitive investments throughout the UNC System. At NC State, that includes a new STEM building on our main campus, funding for our growth in enrollment, and repair and renovation funds to address our backlog of infrastructure and building maintenance needs – all of which are critical to supporting our faculty, staff and students and fulfilling the education and research missions of this great university. Because there has been no resolution at this point, we are left working off of last year’s budget. Unfortunately, this means we still don’t have the required authority to provide much-deserved annual salary increases to faculty and staff at this time. However, I want to assure each of you that we continue to work diligently with our elected leaders to try and remedy this issue.

Recently the Board of Governors for the UNC System issued a resolution with their stance on the proposed budget, and I would encourage you to take a look at it. It speaks to the immense value of the UNC System’s educational services and the economic contribution that North Carolina’s public universities have on the state. I am very proud of the large role that our university plays by educating more than 36,000 students, employing nearly 9,000 North Carolinians, and adding over $6.5 billion to our state’s economy every year.

Most importantly, I want to thank you all for your continued dedication and service to NC State. We could not be a leading public research university helping to remake our world for the better without the key role that you each play.

Sincerely,
Randy Woodson
