Advancing a Diverse and Inclusive Wolfpack

Dear NC State Community:

At NC State, we are a community of learners, innovators, creative entrepreneurs and big thinkers and doers abounding with passion and driven for purpose. Our courage fuels us to push beyond boundaries. Our bold ambition propels us forward to tackle the grand challenges of a complicated world. We are the Wolfpack.

The strength of our Pack is each and all of our people. Amazing individuals from all across our state, this nation and the globe, from all backgrounds and walks of life, enrich and strengthen how we think and what we do. We are better because of this. It’s what makes our community extraordinary.

Please know that each and every one of you are a valued, respected and very important part of our Wolfpack. You are welcome, and you are appreciated, here at NC State.

I am pleased we were recently able to announce the successful conclusion of a national search for our vice provost for institutional equity and diversity. In this critical position, Sheri Schwab will continue leading the important work of advancing the university’s core values of equity, diversity and inclusion to build a stronger working, learning and living environment for all members of the NC State community. You can read more about her appointment and experience here.

In this critical role, the vice provost for institutional equity and diversity sits on the Chancellor’s Cabinet helping ensure issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion are significant considerations in all university decision making. As Sheri has demonstrated throughout her career, I am confident she will continue to guide decisions through an inclusive lens – working to ensure that NC State is a welcoming place for all.

However, the responsibility of creating, supporting and advancing a positive, inclusive campus falls on us all as members of the Wolfpack. As students, faculty, staff and administrators within this community, we each must continually choose to learn and grow, and perhaps most importantly, act in ways that value empathy, respect, tolerance and equity. A few suggestions follow.

  • Keep up with the latest diversity and inclusion-related news, events, announcements and opportunities by subscribing to Diversity Digest.
  • Review the Diversity web portal. This site is intended to make it easy to find the wealth of information about NC State’s efforts as it relates to diversity and inclusion, including education and training resources, diversity and inclusion programs, details about NC State’s Campus Community Centers, an events calendar and more.
  • Engage with your residence hall, Greek organization, student organization, college or division to know what initiatives are underway in which you can participate.

If you experience or witness bias-related incidents, behaviors or actions, please reach out. We have many resources in place to respond appropriately and provide support for all of our community members. You can report an incident and receive guidance and resources via our online reporting site, Safe at State.

I firmly believe that our university can be and must be a model of how individuals from all backgrounds, beliefs and experiences come together, respect, learn from and support one another for the benefit of our community members and the world around us. After all, that’s what it means to be part of the Wolfpack.

Sincerely,

Randy Woodson
Chancellor
