Chancellor’s Message Regarding Recent Events in Charlotte

Dear NC State Students, Faculty and Staff:

Far too many times over the last several months I’ve felt the need to send a message to our campus community addressing tragic events happening around the world, across our nation, and now close to home in our own state. Like many in our community, I’ve watched with great sadness as the events unfolding in Charlotte have again sent grief and unrest across our country.

On behalf of NC State, I’d like to offer our sympathies to all in our community who have been affected by these events.

As we each struggle with how to deal with these latest events, I encourage everyone to do so in healthy, peaceful and productive ways. At NC State, we encourage our community to make their voices heard in a respectful manner.

If you feel you need to talk to someone about the events in Charlotte, or any other situations, students should not hesitate to contact one of the several counselors available 24 hours a day by calling 919-515- 2423. Students can also visit the Counseling Center on the second floor of the Student Health Center on campus from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. weekdays.

Faculty and staff can access confidential counseling through the university’s Faculty and Staff Assistance Program by calling 866-467-0467. Professional staff members are also available for students, faculty and staff in the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity by calling 919-515-3148.

As we join campuses and communities in our own state and across the country in addressing issues of race, intolerance and discrimination, I want to to reiterate NC State’s deep commitment to diversity and equity. NC State will continue striving to ensure that our environment supports and encourages the free and open exchange of ideas and opinions while also ensuring that all members of our community feel safe and are treated with dignity and respect.

Working together, we will continue to bring about positive change and move this university, and our society, forward.
