Response to Orlando shooting
Dear NC State Community:
Early Sunday morning’s hateful and horrible shooting at an Orlando nightclub – the worst mass shooting in U.S. history – is the latest tragedy that has deeply saddened our nation and had a significant impact on members of our NC State community.
On behalf of the NC State family, our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the victims, their families and friends. Please also let me offer condolences to anyone in our community personally affected by this tragic violence.
While officials sort out details about the shooter and his motives, we do know the attack targeted a popular gay nightclub on an evening promoted as “Latin Night.” It is important during this time that NC State stands in solidarity with and support of our GLBT community and Hispanic community.
We don’t need to be personally involved in a tragic situation to be affected. If the impact of these shootings becomes overwhelming or you need to talk to someone, students should not hesitate to contact one of the several counselors available 24 hours a day by calling 919-515- 2423. Students can also visit the Counseling Center on the second floor of the Student Health Center on campus from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. weekdays.
Faculty and staff can access confidential counseling through the university’s Faculty and Staff Assistance Program by calling 866-467-0467. Professional staff members are also available for students, faculty and staff in the GLBT Center Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. in 5230 Talley Student Union, and in the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity by calling 919-515-3148. The Office of Hispanic/Latino Student Affairs is available at 4261 Talley Student Union and by calling 919-515-3835.
As we all strive to make any sense of this horrific violence, please remember to take care of yourselves, take care of those around you, and be especially mindful to look after other members of our Pack who might be hurting. Finally, please do not hesitate to contact any of the many caring staff members at NC State who are here for you.
Sincerely,
Randy Woodson
Chancellor
